16 million people in the United States have chronic obstructive lung disease – and about the same number don’t know they have it! For too many men and women now live with a serious, progressive, and often undiagnosed medical condition impacting their life. Lung disease is one of the few disease categories where the number of people diagnosed continues to climb every year: The fastest growing members of this group are women.
While there is no cure at this time, research shows that with a correct diagnosis and treatment plan, the disease can be managed. Those with lung diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or interstitial lung disease (ILD) now can live many years enjoying life. However, we need more research across this wide spectrum of lung diseases to help lower the number of patients, and reduce the impact on those living with chronic lung diseases:
PERF’s focus is on practical projects and research that can bring rapid benefit to patients with breathing difficulties. Among the many accomplishments we are very proud of, is the world’s first endowed Chair of Rehabilitative Sciences, and the research that demonstrates the benefit of pulmonary rehabilitation for patients with COPD and other respiratory conditions.
PERF is a small non-profit foundation entirely supported by volunteers.
